One question to reclaim your focus
👀 Today’s tip: When reading something online, ask yourself: Do I have anything to learn from this?
Medium’s Siobhan O’Connor recently tweeted her rule of thumb for reading on the internet: “Do I have anything to learn from this?” she wrote. “If not, I close that tab.”
It’s worth repeating: You can always close the tab. The writer Mark Manson has written on Forge about improving your “attention diet,” or the information you consume: “In a world with infinite information and opportunity, you don’t grow by knowing or doing more,” he explained. “You grow by correctly focusing on less.” Asking yourself if what you’re reading adds value is a quick way to cut out the junk and make sure your attention diet is one that nourishes.
