Today’s tip: Before agreeing to something, ask yourself, “Would I be willing to do this tomorrow?”

“It’s easy to sign yourself up for something in April when it’s only September,” Erin Zammett Ruddy writes in The Little Book of Life Skills. But while time may currently feel a lot stranger than it used to, it is marching on. And eventually, Future You is going to be confronted with all the commitments that Past You added to your plate.

Save your future self the trouble of having to bail on something you don’t have the bandwidth for, and instead use this trick that Ruddy borrows from the time-management expert (and Forge columnist) Laura Vanderkam: Treat every potential demand for your time like it’s happening the very next day, and say yes or no accordingly.
