You Have More Control Than You Think

“Whatever goes in our ears and in front of our eyes is the foundation of both our thinking and our moods,” Kelly Corrigan writes on her Medium blog. “Our greatest single act of agency is deciding what to feast on.”

It’s a necessary reminder: With so much outside our control, choosing media to consume isn’t just a way to pass the quarantine hours or numb ourselves against the crushing tide of anxiety (or feed said anxiety through endless doomscrolling). Picking our TV shows, articles, and books is quietly one of the most meaningful decisions available to us — especially when we’re not seeing the people who usually give shape and texture to our days.

“I’m down to two, my husband and my 17-year-old,” Corrigan writes. “That means my pretend friends — i.e. the people I read, watch and listen to — better be damn good.”
