“When stumped by a life choice, choose ‘enlargement’ over happiness.” —Oliver Burkeman
From Burkeman’s final column for The Guardian. For more than a decade, the author has investigated ways to live a fulfilled life. One thing he’s learned: While humans are terrible at predicting what will make us happy, we have a keen sense for whether a decision will enlarge or diminish us. Writes Burkeman: “You tend to just know whether, say, leaving or remaining in a relationship or a job, though it might bring short-term comfort, would mean cheating yourself of growth.”
