The Great Oat Milk Blind Taste Test of 2021

It was Labor Day when we embarked on the Great Oat Milk Blind Taste Test of 2021. My boyfriend and I had procured six different types of the novel non-dairy milk: Oatly, Oatly Barista Blend, Califia Barista Blend, Silk, Planet Oat Extra Creamy, and Chobani Extra Creamy. I went into another room while he poured each of the oat milks into disposable shot glasses, labeled A through F. While I waited for him to finish setting up our scientific experiment, I thought about how I was almost certainly an Oatly girl. Of all the oat milks, Oatly has a certain respectability to it. It was the brand that thrust oat milk into mainstream culture, and it had the trendiest packaging of them all.

So after I sat down at my dining table, sampling various shots of oat milk, offering up my opinions, and giving each one a letter grade, I was surprised to learn that I was not an Oatly girl at all. In fact, Planet Oat Extra Creamy and Califia Barista Blend were my number ones, each earning an A-. Oatly Barista earned a B+, while Oatly O.G. and Chobani both secured a solid B.
