The trouble with resolutions is that, once you accomplish them, you’re liable to ask yourself: “Okay, now what?”

The solution for all you ambitious goal-setters, writes @Niklas Göke, is “having a theme” to shape your trajectory for the year to come. He explains:

A theme is a baseline ideal, one that you use to guide your actions and decisions. It isn’t worried about tomorrow, nor does it care what happened yesterday. With a theme, all that matters is what you do today. It turns happiness into an attainable, daily standard that’s based on your behavior, not your accomplishments.

Göke has given himself theme every year since 2015 (for 2020, it was “balance”). As he explains it, adopting a one-word theme for your year “allows you to compare all your thoughts, actions, and decisions against a single, universal standard.” It makes your goals and decisions easier to map out.
