One word to make people feel seen

💛 Today’s tip: Replace “How are you?” with “How are you, really?”

Okay, maybe don’t do this every time the Amazon guy delivers a package to your door (that might be weird). But if you’re hoping to spark a deeper connection with someone — a friend, neighbor, or coworker, perhaps — this extra word offers them an invitation to share something real.

As Paul Ollinger observes, the pandemic has given us a new mutual awareness of one another: “We’re not just saying ‘hey’ like we used to, out of courtesy and obligation,” he writes. “Now it feels like we’re saying, ‘Hello, real human being, I see you,’ and ‘Thanks for seeing me. It feels good to be seen.’” When you ask someone how they’re really doing — and then actually listen to their answer — you’re telling them that you’re here.
