Tip: Build your schedule around your “core desired feelings.”

If someone asked you what you have going on this week, you’d probably rattle off all the things you have to do. But what about all the ways you want to feel? On Medium, Kristin Wong makes a case for building your plans around your “core desired feelings,” or CDFs, a concept created by author Danielle LaPorte. The practice ensures that you’re not just checking off a list of tasks, but also feeling fulfilled. One of Wong’s CDFs is “awe”: “I’ve made a big list of activities that conjure that feeling: observe the moon through my telescope, go on a hike, take a road trip to the sequoias,” she writes. Each week, she goes through her list of activities related to her CDFs and puts a few of them on her schedule.

Give it a try. If your CDF is “connection,” you might schedule an evening walk with a neighbor. If your CDF is “energy,” perhaps you can plan a couple HIIT sessions before work. If your CDF is “space,” you might set aside an hour or two to take a long walk or stare aimlessly out the window. When you’re intentional with your time, what you’ll ultimately feel is better.
