Lean into your discomfort

👀 Today’s tip: What you feel awkward about is a clue to where you have work to do.

Being an ally means showing support, Willie Jackson explains in his Forge story “Don’t Be an Ally, Be an Accomplice,” but being an accomplice runs deeper. It means risking something — your own comfort or status — to disrupt the status quo. Speaking up can be awkward, but that’s how you know you’re doing it right.

What or who makes you uncomfortable? That’s probably an opportunity for personal growth, as Jackson writes: “For some people, the growth opportunity might involve slowing down, taking up less space in conversations across difference, and becoming a more active listener. For others, it might mean admitting when they’ve made a mistake and offering a genuine apology to the person harmed.”

Think about something that made you uncomfortable recently. Next time you find yourself in a similar situation, observe yourself and consider what you could do differently.
