A scheduling trick to help you relax

Today’s tip: Schedule your “me time” as a break in the middle of the day, instead of waiting for the end.

A work break doesn’t have to be just a quick respite. As we all continue to figure out how to restructure our days during the pandemic, consider moving your biggest chunk of daily personal time — the 30 minutes, hour, or hours you take to unwind after work — to smack in the middle of the workday, before you’re too tired to enjoy it.

“One reason people stay up too late on weekdays — and then crash on weekends — is that after the kids are in bed, the work is done, and the chores are finished, they feel their time is finally theirs,” writes Laura Vanderkam, Forge’s time-management expert. “Who wants to cut that short? But other me-time options don’t require burning the candle at both ends. Take a real lunch break and watch a favorite show or read a book. If you have kids, trade off weekend coverage with your partner (or a friend or neighbor) so each of you gets time to chill.” Grant yourself the license to take an actual break, not just a pause.
