A mental shift to make your writing more powerful
đď¸ Todayâs tip: Write with one specific person in mind.
Imagining a single reader is easy enough when youâre writing, say, an email. But you should also do it when writing a speech or a presentation â or even an article or novel.
Going deeper, not wider, makes for better writing, explains the popular Medium writer Darius Foroux. He sometimes imagines his friend Quincey when writing about personal finance.
âWhen you try to make something for everyone, it usually serves no one,â he writes. âBefore I write a story, I ask myself: âWho is this for?ââŚOnce you decide who youâre writing for, youâll be able to figure out what should and shouldnât be in your story.â
