A ground rule to set before socially distant get-togethers

Today’s tip: For every plan you make with friends, agree on a hard stop.

The most important ingredient for socializing safely in pandemic times: overcommunication. As ’s Michelle Woo explains, part of that is defining a clear window for how long you’ll be hanging out.

“As time goes on, it’s tempting to loosen the rules you’ve set for distancing, especially when alcohol is involved,” she writes. “So decide on a time limit for your hangout — say, an hour or hour-and-a-half. Then when the day comes, set an alarm.” Making sure everyone is on the same page ahead of time means that when you’re together, you can spend every minute actually enjoying each others’ company.
